For over 20 years I have provided educational consulting services as a teaching artist. As an artist-in-residence, I have worked with K – 12 teachers, students and administrators on a wide variety of visual arts projects helping teachers and students learn how to use arts processes and content as learning tools within their academic studies. I have also taught individual classes at my studio. Presently I am focusing on providing coaching services to a broad range of stakeholders in the arts-in-education arena.

Workshops for education administration and faculty:

These provide a skills-based understanding of arts processes as well as a content-based approach to broadening pedagogical as well as managerial practice. These workshops can also be designed to help arts specialists link more effectively with academic curricula.

Workshops for individuals:

Learn specific arts processes such as solar etching. Learn how to use specialized equipment pertinent to an art studio.

"Working with Karen was supportive and thoughtful. Karen had what seemed like an endless amount of suggestions when we were stuck. Our formative research process was powerful and one that produced our goal, but the most important part was the integrity in the process. With so many creative and educational people in the room we really needed someone who respected our process while having the skills to keep us on track to meet our desired outcomes."

"In addition to her passion for arts education -- whether skills-based or interdisciplinary -- Karen Fitzgerald brings a unique "three-in-one" package as a Coach. As an experienced, and highly successful teaching artist within NYC schools, she understands the challenges and needs of arts specialists, and the inner workings of a school learning community. As a practicing visual arts professional, she understands the creative process. Applying a sharp intellect and communication style, she creates a comfort zone in which participants feel inclined to share, engage in reflective practice, and move forward towards established goals."
