Guardian Gargoyle for Peace
Guardian Gargoyle For Peace, 2003-05, mosaic over fiberglas, 5'x4.5'x4.5', $35,000 budget.
Produced as a community collaboration that grew out of Public School 99's school-based Parents-as-Arts Partners program, the sculpture was gifted to the Maple Grove Cemetery. The form was designed as an androgynous human head, with hands protecting the face. Each participating family designed and installed a symbol of peace. The symbols are united on the branches of a tree of life at the back of the head. When each persons' ideas and abilities are valued and included, collaboration changes individual participants while creating a strong sense of community. I taught specific skills to enable participants, facilitated the group collaboration process and managed all aspects of producing the final product including fundraising. Funding sources include the Center for Arts Education, the New York Assembly and the NYC Council.
